What Are Fibroids?

Fibroids, also known as uterine fibroids, are non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the uterus. These tumors vary in size — from as small as a seed to as large as a melon — and are made up of muscle and fibrous tissue. While not always harmful, fibroids can cause significant discomfort, heavy bleeding, fertility issues, and disrupt daily life. From an Ayurvedic perspective, fibroids are seen as a result of imbalance in the Kapha and Pitta doshas, leading to improper tissue growth, hormonal imbalances, and accumulation of toxins (Ama). At Ojas Ayurved, we offer holistic, safe, and non-surgical Ayurvedic treatment for fibroids to naturally shrink fibroids, regulate hormones, and improve reproductive health.

Types of Fibroids

Understanding the type and location of fibroids is essential for effective treatment. The four main types include:

Intramural Fibroids

These are the most common type, growing within the muscular wall of the uterus. They can cause pressure, pain, and heavy menstrual bleeding.

Submucosal Fibroids

Located just beneath the uterine lining, these fibroids may protrude into the uterine cavity and are closely linked with excessive bleeding and fertility problems.

Subserosal Fibroids

These develop on the outer surface of the uterus and can press on nearby organs like the bladder or bowel, causing bloating or urinary issues.

Pedunculated Fibroids

These fibroids grow on a stalk-like structure attached to the uterus. They can cause sharp pain if the stalk gets twisted.

Causes of Fibroids

Ayurveda believes that fibroids in the uterus stem from long-standing doshic imbalances, particularly Kapha and Pitta aggravation. Contributing factors include:

Most Popular Questions

Yes. For small to medium-sized fibroids, Ayurveda is highly effective. Through herbal formulations like Kanchanar Guggulu and specialized therapies like Uttar Basti, we focus on melting the Mansa Granthi and balancing hormones to prevent future growths.
Yes, many women conceive successfully with fibroids. However, depending on the location (like Submucosal), they can interfere. Our treatment focuses on clearing the uterine environment to support healthy conception and pregnancy.
We recommend an Anti-Kapha diet. This involves reducing heavy dairy, refined sugar, and fried foods, while incorporating "scraping" (Lekhaniya) herbs and spices that help in metabolizing the growths.
Most patients see relief from symptoms like heavy bleeding and pain within 1–2 menstrual cycles. A measurable reduction in fibroid size on an Ultrasound usually takes 4–6 months of consistent Ayurvedic care.

While fibroids are almost always non-cancerous (benign), leaving them untreated can lead to a progressive worsening of your quality of life. If ignored, fibroids may:

  • Cause Chronic Anemia: Continuous heavy menstrual bleeding can lead to severe iron deficiency, causing permanent fatigue and weakness.
  • Grow and Press on Organs: Large fibroids can act as "space-occupying lesions," pressing against the bladder (causing frequent urination) or the rectum (causing chronic constipation).
  • Impact Fertility: Fibroids can distort the uterine cavity, making conception difficult or increasing the risk of pregnancy complications.
  • Lead to Acute Pain: If a fibroid outgrows its blood supply, it can undergo "red degeneration," causing sudden, intense pelvic pain.
